Year 5

Miss Lang (Y5O) & Mrs Stemp and Mr Wakefield (Y5L)

Year 5 is an exciting and challenging year for our children.

In the upper key stage they are expected to take a more mature and independent approach towards learning.

There are high expectations for achievement in all subjects by all pupils.

  • The Year 5 curriculum is broad and balanced with many opportunities for cross curriculum links. English and Mathematics are taught in depth but some examples of what to expect are shown here. There is a strong focus on drafting and editing written work. Reading is expected to develop, so that children can skim and scan texts for key information. Children are taught to listen carefully to another person’s point of view and make relevant contributions to discussions.
  • In mathematics children are divided into two groups to extend the more able and to support those who need further reinforcement of topics. There is a strong emphasis on investigations, whilst also reinforcing written mathematical skills.
  • In Science the children will work on challenging investigations to conduct a fair test, make predictions, record and evaluate their findings.
  • The Computing curriculum extends the children’s previous knowledge and skills and has a strong focus on coding,3D modelling and web development; this is all taught within a strict environment of E-Safety.
  • The creative curriculum in Year 5 gives children the opportunity to independently research new topics. The children present work in a variety of formats, so that every child can feel they are achieving and valued. Building on their musical experiences the children learn the violin.
  • Children in Year 5 are expected to set a good example to lower year groups and as such, any issues with friendships or behaviour are quickly addressed in Circle time and PSHE.
